Well I am certainly not the one to ask for a good recipe for boilies. I made my first batch today ever. After searching around for a while to find a good starter recipe I determined that there were no simple recipes. So off I went to get the ingredients that I did not have. I had to buy semolina flour and soy flour. I had really hoped to use ingredients that I already had.
Anyway, I mixed up cornflour (I only had white cornflour), semolina, soy flour, eggs, strawberry drink mix, and a little powdered sugar. The mix was failing to get putty-like and was pretty sticky. So I added white flour to dry it out and make it kneadable.
Then I started rolling out logs to cut and form balls. Quickly I discovered that the logs were too fat and I rolled out ropes - the thinner the better.
I was rolling on wax paper because I did not want to get the red die on my counter. The paper moved around alot and that was a problem. But a little flour on the work surface helped to keep the dough from sticking. About two thirds through my dough was drying out. Next time I will wrap the dough in plastic wrap while it is waiting.
They boiled faster than I could roll out the balls and they were not all evenly sized. I tried one and I don't think they taste very good.
But all that matters is that the carp will take them. So off I went to Vickies restaurant that is right on the river. About a month ago I was there and my son was feeding french fries to the carp and they came right up even letting him touch them while he was offering food. I knew I would be able to watch the carp eat the bait and I could judge how much they would like it.
And the result was that the carp did like my boilies better than french fries and better than leftover hot dog bun. I also saw one eat a bit of my daughters leftover hot dog that was at least 2 1/2 inches long. So no more fears about them not taking the bigger boilies.
I made a device to thread the boilies on the hair rig by nipping off part of the eye of a sewing needle and fixing it on a bit of dowel for a handle. This too I have never done before so hopefully the boilies will be easy to attach. The knots were intimidating me but after looking at them some more I think I will be able to tie them. I just hope they work like they are claimed to.

Thanks for the tip lakeman. Thats great the carp did not hesitate to accept the boilies. I have been purchasing premade boilies for some time now, and what i have found is it takes a bit of trainng the carp to get them to accept these baits. On a new water, I usually prebait with the boilies for about 3-4 days prior to fishing it. This way the carp will know the boilies are a tasty, nutritious food source. After they figure that out they will readily accept them. The trend I was seeing was, without prebaiting their willingness to eat a boilie was sparse...
I'm sure you will master the hair rig in no time...It's very easy to tie. Just hard to understand at first. Please keep me updated on your boilie efforts. I would love to hear about your first fish on a boilie/hair rig!

Thanks for the encouragement, Carphunter.
By the way, label the boilies in the freezer.
I put mine in a plastic bag in the freezer. A couple of hours later I happened to open the freezer and I thought " Gee, these don't look too bad, maybe I should tell my wife not to eat them - naaah. She wouldn't do that...
Well anyway my wife was home alone all day today and when I came home there was a small bowl on the counter with a few boilies in it. I knew instantly what had happened.
My son (7) and I laughed hysterically as she told us how she thought they were strawberry-yogurt covered raisins and popped three into her mouth. Thinking that freezing did not improve the taste of strawberry-yogurt raisins she figured it was faster to swallow the horrible tasting treat rather than to spit them out, and she did!
