Good Fishing in Bad Weather? 7 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 2
I have been doing some personal research on the way weather factors affect fishing.
In everyones actual general experience(not something you read), how has fishing been for you on a sunny warm day, an overcast dreary day, or rain/storm front? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I have fished all kinds of weather for Carp and have found my best days here in NJ have come on overcast days with no wind and rainy days! The past week here it has rained a few times and those were the days we landed 2 25lbers and a few smaller. Then the weather changed for the nicer and all of a sudden the fish have been real quite!

Hi Carphunter420,
I fish year round here in Texas the only weather I find makes a major difference is that the fishing is a lot better when its blowing towards the bank you are fishing.

Thanks for the info guys...Interesting stuff.I seem to have best fishing on warm, sunny days, for some reason fishing falls off during the more dismal days.It is raining here today,so I'm gonna go fishing today and test the theory again.I'll let ya know how it goes.

I fish rain or shine, I personally seem to do better on overcast days and light rain. I fish shallow canals, on sunny days I don't get too much action after 10-11 in the morning,I suppose it's because it is so shallow the fish get hot and go for cover not sure though. At my favorite canal on an overcast day I almost always get some action, usually average 1 fish or bite an hour in the morning (knock on wood). The bigger canals here hold the big guys but the action is very slow paced reguardless of weather. The small canals hold great fishing as long as it's not too hot. My personal best (in the one year i've been carp fishing)from the small canals is 14lb. 7oz. and the big canals 27 lbs. 10 oz, both on overcast days. love them overcast days.

Welcome back Amsterdam carp man.

After many fishing trips in various weather, I realize there is no particular pattern of weather that is consistantly good or bad...I have caught fish in almost every type of weather and have blanked in the same types.

I believe barometric pressure may have more of an effect on fishing than the weather in general.

Below are some general effects of barometric pressure:
Some general rules regarding barometric pressure are:

High Pressure
Typical Weather: Clear skies
Fishing Trends: Fish slow down, find cover or go to deeper waters.
Suggested Tactics: Fish in cover and in deeper waters.

Rising Pressure
Typical Weather: Clearing or improving
Fishing Trends: Fish tend to become slightly more active
Suggested Tactics: Fish at intermediate and deeper depths.

Normal and Stable Pressure
Typical Weather: Fair
Fishing Trends: Typical Weather: Normal fishing
Suggested Tactics: Experiment with your favorite baits

Falling Pressure
Typical Weather: Degrading
Fishing Trends: Most active fishing
Suggested Tactics: Fishing the more shallow waters may work well.

Slightly Lower Pressure
Typical Weather: Usually cloudy
Fishing Trends: Many fish will head away from cover and seek shallower waters. Some fish will become more aggressive.

Low Pressure
Typical Weather: Rainy and stormy
Fishing Trends: Fish will tend to become less active the longer this period remains.
Suggested Tactics: As the action subsides, try fishing at deeper depths.

It is important to note that after a long feeding period, the action will slow regardless of the following conditions. On the flip side, a long period of poor fishing conditions may be followed by a really good one.
It is also important to note, that the barometric pressure is just one of many factors that effect fish feeding habits. Other effects include water temperature, light, tidal forces, water clarity, the pH level, water levels, wind/surface disturbance, boat traffic, fishing pressure, and so on. Another good judging factor of fishing is the solunar effects which play a role in the tidal and illumination factors.

Just some things to keep ya thinking on consistantly catching these often elusive fish.

tight lines...
