I dont live in Alabama but as far as finding carp on rivers, it seems there are some universal truths. Carp dont usually hang out in the fast sections of water, they prefer the calmer parts of the river. Eddies along the bank or where 2 currents collide, around the base of dams, marinas, and wide slow sections of the main river channel are a few things to look for in rivers where carp can be found.

Whole kernal canned corn is a great starter bait. Worms also work but I hate using them because EVERYTHING will eat them! With corn, 75% of the time it will be a carp that takes it. My favorite is Green Giant brand "Super Sweet Yellow and White" Before you start fishing, Throw a few good handfulls of corn in the spot where you will be fishing. This will attract and stimulate feeding on that spot and for that bait. Periodically re-bait the spot with another handfull or two. Carp rigs can get pretty complex but for simplicity try a #6 hook on a 6-10" hooklink(leader) with 1/2oz - 1oz egg sinker seperating the hooklink and weight with a barrel swivel. If the river current will allow it, leave a small amount of slack in the line. That way the carp wil feel no resistance when it picks up the bait. Use the lightest weight you can get away with and still keep the bait pinned to the bottom. Make sure the bait completely conceals the hook. Hope this helps.
