Welcome, First thing I would advise is to learn the hair rig. Although not absolutely necessary, it will put more fish in the net than bait on hook method, guaranteed! Some feel its too complicated to learn but i assure you its very easy and worth the effort. Probably the best starter bait, and easiest to obtain is whole kernal canned corn. You cant go wrong with corn... Then scout some good spots slackwaters, dams, shallow pools, etc. and give it a go! There are many specialized carp rigs that are required in certain situations, but to unpressured carp, a simple bottom bait rig should be sufficient(sliding or fixed weight) and a high quality strong hook. A good baseline size for 2 kernals of corn would be size 8. Bait you spot with several handfuls of corn in about 10-20 diameter before you cast. Then casting your bait into the bed of freebies. This will draw carp and induce feeding. Finding your bait and hopefully getting a hookup.
Carp are very powerful and enduring fighters(especially the big ones!) Make sure you use adequate gear when fishing large carp 20+lbs.!
There is a ton of info all over the web, and i would suggest doing some reading up to cover all the angles, otherwise this could be a very long post!
Hope this helps...good luck!
