I personally start fishing for carp shortly after the ice melts and all the way up to the freeze. Cold water carping can be a challenge and a test of will. Warmer water temps will increase the fishes metabolism and its appetite. There is usually a good bit of prespawn fishing between the ice melt and typically April-May. Then The spawn...This is obvious when you see the carp individually or in pairs muddling close to shore. During this the fish have but one thing on their mind. It's very difficult to catch these fish untill nature has taken its course. After the spawn, which will last a couple weeks, the fish will be very hungry and fishing will resume till it freezes once again.

Spawn time is dependant on your geographic location but usually around mid spring to early summer. It seems just about impossible to catch carp when they are spawning. There is usually some decent fishing pre-spawn, then they will go a couple weeks without eating during the spawn. After nature has taken its course the carp will be ready to eat and post spawn fishing can be excellent. The spawn can be a great time to view some of the fish in your swim as they will usually be in the shallows preparing their beds.
